1) Wednesday, 21.5.80: This day was organized by the Lutheran World
Federation/Swedish National Committee, Uppsala. Mr. Sigvard Tarenius,
Assistant to the Deputy Director of the LWF/SNC drove us from Stockholm
to Uppsala, about 70 km.

We were told that all matters related to refugees (quotas, selection,
integration and care) are the sole responsibility of the Swedish
Government. It supports the activities of the UNHCR and is under
the obligation to receive and care for refugees within its borders.
LWF/SNC, is, therefore, not involved in refugee work within Sweden
but provides very considerable amounts to international agencies
for the care of refugees outside Sweden.
b) Flen: Mr. Tarenius drove us to one of Sweden's reception centres
in Flen, about 120 km south of Uppsala. This Government operated centre is supervised by an elderly, very experienced person,
Lennart Hjelm who has all the qualifications desirable for the post.
The building, a former army-hospital, is in excellent condition. It houses not only about 150 Vietnamese boat refugees but also
refugees from the Middle East.
The facilities for language training, general training and education,
medical care, recreation, cooking and general living accommodations
are all of high standard.
