I have just returned from a visit to Thailand a bit of business and holiday- where I visited Chiang Mai, the Golden Triangle and the UN Crop Replacement Programme. I also got some impression of one refugee camp for boat people in the south. I attach a note which I recorded on my visit to the refugee camp.
2. As you know we have always been a bit concerned about comparative standards in camps here and the rest of the region. I don't know whether Khao Sung was a typical representative of camps in the region. If so then it was as overcrowded as our camps are and I thought a bit more squalid, The fact that the refugees were unable to work gave the impression that the place was even more run down than the Hong Kong camps. On the other hand there was a bit more space and the beach and the sea were a good asset.
