refugees in China with some genuine possibility of resettlement. I reinforced this point with Jacques Terlin, the new head of the UNHCR office here, and also mentioned to the NCNA the importance of the authorities within China providing adequate specific details to the UNHCR office in Peking so that arrangements can be made within China for those acceptable to resettlement countries to be given their onward travel documents before legally transitting Hong Kong if that is the most convenient route. We continue to get evidence that some refugees in China are able to do this and only last week 36 Vietnamese refugees accepted by Switzerland passed through here in transit.
