VIETNAMESE REFUGEES FROM CHINA
1.
Grateful that Chinese took back in January nearly 3,000
Vietnamese refugees who entered Hong Kong illegally after.
being accepted for settlement in China.
2. However, there are now a further 3,800 awaiting repatriation.
Many have been waiting for 8 to 10 months. Of recent arrivals,
765 arrived in May and 754 so far this month.
3. Chinese authorities have frequently confirmed, in Peking
and Hong Kong, their policy to accept these refugees back.
Last raised by the Embassy in Peking on 9 June and with NCNA
by Political Adviser on 10 June.
4. This problem adds to Hong Kong's burden, both of refugees
direct from Vietnam and of illegal immigrants.
5. Grateful if Chinese would make immediate arrangements
to take them back. Details can be arranged through NCNA in
Hong Kong. who have been very helpful.
