Please refer to your letter of 17 April about the visit by Dr Stumpf and Miss Lee to Denmark from 17 to 20 May. Although Dr Stumpf told me he would be sending the Governor a report of his visit here, you may find it helpful to have the following round-up as seen from the Embassy.

2. Danchurchaid arranged a programme for them, which included visits to Danish refugee centres, a press conference, radio interview and a meeting with the Danish Refugee Council, at which officials from the MFA and Ministry of Justice were represented. David Ratford and I were also able to have a useful general discussion with Dr Stumpf and Miss Lee about the refugee situation in Hong Kong over lunch, at which they met an active young Social Democratic member of the Danish and European Parliaments.
3. Dr. Stumpf and Miss Lee seem to have created a very favourable impression here. The Head of the MFA Department responsible for refugee questions, who attended Dr Stumpf and Miss Lee's meeting with the Danish Refugee Council, has told us it went very well. They were particularly interested in Dr Stumpf's suggestion that refugees selected for resettlement might be given language and other training in Hong Kong while waiting to leave.
4. The local newspapers carried sympathetic reports of the press conference which will have been useful in drawing public attention to the particular problems in Hong Kong. Enclosed are copies of relevant press cuttings; we can provide translations if these are
needed.
5. The visit also seems to have been particularly timely as there is to be a full meeting of the Refugee Council next week at which the next stages in the Danish programme are to be considered.
We shall keep in touch with the MFA to learn how matters progress and let you know if there is anything to report.
