The United Kingoda's record in general in this field is one of which

we can be proud. For centuries we have givon asylum to those

escaping persecution and we can rightly clain to have made a substantial contribution to the world-wide efforts to cope with the present refugee crisis. Our active support for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees has been shown through close day-to-day co-operation and through substantial contributions in terms not only of resettlement places but also financial help.

The Government's contribution of £0 million to U.H.H.C.R.'s

general programme is the third highest of any donor nation and

demonstrates the strength of our continuing commitment to this

humanitarian cause. Our own thanks are due to lir. Jean Heidler

and to the U.N.H.C.R. representatives in Hong Kong for the detailed help they have given us in the present refugce oporation.

Conclusion

Mr. Chairman. A successful refugee operation calls for a responco
