Vietnamese Refugees: Visit of
Mr. Pointon and Miss Dalglish
Thank you for your letter of 1st May, 1980 to the Governor on the above subject.

We have suggested to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees here that books, tapes and other material should be made available for refugees who wish to study English by themselves. The UNHCR office has shown interest and plans to implement this scheme in refugee camps. We shall now put them in touch with the British Council and Linguaphone.

The video tape on Thorney Island has been received by the UNHCR and they are making arrangements to show it in camps.
We have not yet received the slides but we expect them to arrive by bag shortly. The brochure, I am afraid, may take a little longer as the Hong Kong (London) Office have said that its preparation has not been completed. The JCVA's suggestion of a counsellor for resettlement has already been adopted by the UNHCR. Mr. Tim Shao, an Australian Chinese, has been co-ordinat- ing resettlement counselling in UNHCR camps here since early February.

The Home Office Selection Team is expected to arrive in Hong Kong on 8th June, and, as you no doubt know, we have agreed to pay for Mr. Bao's visit. We wish them as successful a mission as they had last time.
