The numbers under detention represents the number of Vietnamese Refugees who have been settled in China before coming to Hong Kong illegally.

9,231 refugees have arrived since 1 January 1980. The increase of 201 since 12 August is due to the arrival of nine small boats and a commercial flight carrying 11 refugees who were employees of the former British Consulate staff in Ho Chi Minh City.

UNHCR has resettled 24,258 refugees since 1 January of which 621 in the past week.
