During the incident, more than 100 armed policemen were sent

to demolish 7 huts which were located on private land (not

crown land). At the same time, 18 out of 24 who were arrested

were not residents living inside the let of demolition. Most

of them were dragged out from their own house, beaten up

seriously and then arrested by the police. In Appendix(11)

ve tried to narrate how some of the residents were treated

by the police and they were judged before the law. Later,

even more charges without reasonable grounds (Appendix 11)

like possession of offensive weapons, obstructing police and resisting arrest etc. were added to the people, besides being charged with taking part in an unlawful assembly

B)

Unlawful Assembly

The residents could not have been charged with taking

part in an unlawful assembly by noting the following facts :

1. Most people were inside their houses which were located

on private land, when the policemen came on May 27, 1979.

They did net gether together purposely or had the intention

to assemble.

2.

3.

Some of them were forced out of their houses by teargas

bombs.

4. Some of then saw their neighbours being beaten up by the

police seriously and came out of their houses to stop

the police brutality.

5.

People in Lot 16 wanted to protect their property only. Since they were so unfairly treated by the Government

and cheated by the Landlord.

C) Invasion of Privacy

Police had no right to enter Lot 15 because it was private

land. People living there had even right to resist if the ir

privacy was invaded. Therefore, the entry of the Police into

the area was unlawful. Beating up and arresting people of

Lot 15 were even more ridiculous.
