Explanatory Memorandum

This Bill makes several amendments to the

Apprenticeship Ordinance found necessary after 4 years of operation.

Clause 2 provides that technical institutions shall give preference to registered apprentices who are required by attendance orders to enter courses at institutions over persons who are not registered

apprentices.

Clause 3 extends the option for the registra- tion of contracts of apprenticeship that do not have to be registered so that an older apprentice designated trade and any apprentice in a non-designated trade may register his apprenticeship provided it is

Clause 4 enables the Commissioner for

Labour to shorten the period of notice required to terminate a contract of apprenticeship where he is of the opinion that a shorter period of notice would be beneficial to the apprentice.

Clause 5 amends section 31 of the principal Ordinance to remove an anomaly so that the sanctions

applicable to a registered apprentice who repudiates his contract or is dismissed for misconduct apply to all registered apprentices and not only to those
