BRITISH CIVIL AVIATION REPRESENTATIVE IN THE FAR EAST
supporty
Sir Michael Wilford has written to the PUS to support
the continuation of the post of British Civil Aviation Repre-
sentative in the Far East (BCARFE) after the retirement of
Mr Graeme Wilson next May and has encouraged his colleagues
in the area to put forward their own views on the subject.
2.
Although the post of British Civil Aviation Representative
in the Far East is paid for from the FCO vote it has hitherto
been filled by a DOT official and its future is a matter to be
considered between the two Departments. Mr Roberts, the Under-
Secretary in the Civil Aviation International Relations Division
in the DOT, has already told us that he would like to discuss
this subject and the arrangements for consulting posts in the
region in the course of this month. In a time of retrenchment
it will be important for the posts to consider their priorities
and in particular whether essential requirements could be met in
a less expensive way. Comments from Heads of Mission which do
not take into account the overall view as seen from Whitehall,
but merely commend the usefulness of Mr Wilson's work are unlikely
to be helpful and will certainly be seen by the DOT (who are
already upset at Sir M Wilford's démarche) as an attempt to pre-
empt their own consultations.
