ENVIRONMENT
The study of environmental impact associated with the replacement airport emphasized the potential noise envi- ronment and the resulting impact on adjacent land-use planning. A preliminary identification was made of the potential effect of the airport construction on the marine and terrestrial environment of the site area, Lantau Island, neighboring islands, and the mainland.
Noise exposure forecasts were generated for numerous alternative operational patterns for the pilot airport scheme, including noise generated by aircraft engine maintenance and testing operations. The Consultants
The computer modelling technique used to forecast noise exposure is accurate in terms of predicting the noise environment; however, it relies on an accurate assessment of the airport's operational use patterns. Predicting use patterns requires reliable information about the meteorological environment. Because accurate data for winds and occurrences of specific conditions that will affect the operational patterns at the airport are not available, it has been necessary to take a conservative view and analyze a "worst-case" situation for the airport.
Figure 20 indicates the exposure to noise in NEF units that will be experienced under these worst-case assump- tions. As additional meteorological data becomes avail- able, this noise pattern can be reassessed. There is a high level of probability that a more favorable pattern will develop; however, additional data from the Chek Lap Kok recording station is necessary before a more accurate assessment can be made,
