SUBJECT:
I am very sorry that I was unable to meet you in
Hong Kong on 27 September as planned.
As you will appreciate, events in the Middle East
necessitated my immediate return to London from New York
and hence my visit to the Far East was cancelled.
I was, of course, informed of your discussions
with the Prime Minister, Ian Gilmour and Keith Joseph
on the Guangdong nuclear parject and I was able to
express our interest in it when Huang Hua passed through
London on 1 October. We will now try to get a clearer
picture of the Chinese position. Murray MacLehose will
of course be keeping me informed.
It was good of you to go to the trouble of
arranging a picnic lunch and presentation on Guangdong
and I am delighted that Princess Alexandra and Mr Angus
Ogilvie were able to benefit from your thoughtfulness.
