In the early stages of discussions with the Chinese, the supply of a
Magnox reactor appeared possible. There is now however a clear Chinese preference
for a Pressurised Water nuclear reactor. The UK cannot at the moment supply

the heart of such a reactor the nuclear steam supply system - and to remain in
the lead in the project has to secure a nuclear partner. Four countries have the
necessary PWR capability: USA, Japan, Germany and France.
