Jean Sir Lawrence,
GUANGDONG NUCLEAR PROJECT
Thank you for your letter of 27 March on this exciting project, which was sent to me by our Trade Commission in Hong Kong.
The Prime Minister has already written to you following your earlier letter and we are fully behind you in your efforts to establish closer links between Hong Kong and Mainland China. This is a broad field, with important political, trade and commercial implications. Within this, your imaginative response to the prospect of power-generation across the border fits in very well with our overall aims, both for the future of Hong Kong/China relations and the interests of securing major work for British Industry.
I fully appreciate the specialist staff support your management team requires immediately to progress discussions with the Guangdong Electricity Company. I can assure you that we shall provide the support of the kind that you have discussed with Walter Marshall. You will understand that it will be a few days before we can tell you the particular individuals.
While this study is proceeding, we shall be exploring with our industry and financial Departments the other questions that you raise in your letter, so that appropriate arrangements with foreign suppliers for the nuclear steam supply system can be worked out.

I am copying this letter to Derek March to hand on to your people so that they can liaise and keep Ron Dearing taken over from John Lippitt in touch.
With best wishes
