SECRETARY OF STATE'S VISIT TO PEKING

1. When the Chinese Ambassador saw the Chief Clerk on 26 August he asked for our preliminary views on the programme for the Secretary of State's visit to China. The Chief Clerk said that following preliminary discussions with Sir P Cradock, the Embassy in Peking had been asked to make an initial approach to the MFA. He would ask Far Eastern Department to tell the Embassy exactly what proposals had been made and what reaction had been received. The Ambassador asked that

Far Eastern Department should contact Mr Qiu Ke1an, Counsellor, who was present at the meeting.
