British exports in 1979 were 134% up on 1978 at £213 million. Exports January to July 1980 were worth £113 million. Chinese exports to the UK were £138 million in 1979; and £87 million in January to July 1980.

LORD CARRINGTON'S VISIT IN 1975

At the time of his visit in 1975, Lord Carrington was Leader of the Opposition in the House of Lords. His visit, which was in the company of Sir Eric Drake, Chairman of BP, was at the invitation of the People's Institute for Foreign Affairs. He called on Vice Premier Deng Xiaoping, and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs He Ying (who visited Britain in August on his way home from New York, and had talks with Mr Hurd and Mr Luce).
