Introductory summary

Social programmes of expansion largely maintained in spite of anti-inflationary curbs on public spending.

In 1979/80 the imbalances in the economy evident in 1978/79 were much reduced. Growth rate of GDP was 11.5% in real terms. Bouyant economy fortunate in view of Chinese and Vietnamese influx. Struggle with protectionism.

A Standing Commission on Salaries and Conditions of Service was set up to establish and keep under review new pay scales and other matters affecting Government staff/management relations.
