MY VISIT TO HONG KONG
1. My telegram gave my proposed dates for this visit. I am
I had to wait until sorry I was not able to do this before. arrangements for Bill Quantrill's departure from the Department were clearer. (He will be leaving us at the beginning of March and going in April to Lagos as Commercial Counsellor).
2.
There is not much to add to what I have already said about the programme. I am sure that Hong Kong are practiced at squeezing in the maximum amount of information into a limited time.
Generally I need education in all branches of government, as well as getting a feel for social, economic and other activity outside. The topical questions, such as refugees and immigration, are obvious; on the economic side it would be particularly helpful to have as much briefing as possible on the development of cooperation between Hong Kong and Guangdong Province.
3.
The idea of a day or so's leeway at the end of the visit was the Governor's. Certainly it would be very helpful if it could be managed. In any case it would be useful to have a good wash-up session with the Governor and others before I return to London.
4.
From a personal point of view I would welcome an opportunity to see David Bonavia and also Professor Ma Meng at the University (my old tutor).
5.
The Governor has kindly said that I should stay at Government House for the first part of the visit.
