In response to Mr Clift's minutes to you of 14 March and 23 April, you kindly authorised familiarisation visits by me to Hong Kong and China.

2. On the latter, I should be grateful if I could have specific approval for the following journey:

3. The purpose of the visit to Peking was explained in Mr Clift's second minute, i.e. discussions with HM Embassy and calls on the MFA. The purpose of returning via Shanghai would be to see another aspect of China and also to talk to the BP representatives there about Hong Kong's role in the development of China's offshore oil field, a subject on which the department is already in touch with the company as a result of the matter being raised with us by the Hong Kong Government.
