LANTAU/MAINLAND FIXED CROSSING
14
A British consortium led by Mott, Hay and Anderson has been commissioned to produce studies on linking Lantau Island with the mainland. These studies, of which two have been completed,
involve:-
i)
A possible 'Island hopping road link' recommending a crossing of three bridges and associated highways; or alternatively a submerged tube or bored tunnel.
ii) Possible rail link and raod extension from Lantau to another
Island and preliminary study for a causeway as an alternative to the cantilever bridge recommende in (i).
iii)
A detailed design study for bridges proposed in (i).
The consultants expect completion of the first study by late 1981, with pre-qualification documents for consideration in early 1982.
15 Tenders should be issued in mid-1982 with award of contract later that year, however the timetable could be brought forward. A decision to proceed with the crossing depends partly on a Government view to the building of a new airport at Chek-Lap-Kok and industrielisation of Northern Lantau.

On 7 August a HK$15.2m contract for further site investigation was awarded to the Bachy Soletanche group of France. The work will give geotechnical information for the design of the foundation structures, the highway and cut and fill slopes on the banking.
