British firms have secured 25% of the contracts for the £700 million first stage, linking the Central District of Hong Kong Island with Kwun Tong in Kowloon. Metro Cammell (with GEC as principal sub-contractor) secured the contract for the supply of 140 rail cars.

Metro Cammell secured the contract for the supply of 150 cars (worth £50 million approximately) for the Tsuen Wan extension. GEC won a £10m power supply contract and Westinghouse won the £7.5m signalling contract. The track-works contract was awarded to Henry Boot.

US firms have picked up the major contracts so far awarded. These included a £3m contract awarded to Transmark to oversee the modernisation programme and in March 1980, Transmark was awarded a further contract for the design of new and re-modelled Stations. In addition, Met Cam have been awarded the £44m rolling stock contract, Westinghouse Brake and Signal a £66m signalling and telecommunications contract and Balfour Beatty a £4.2m overhead power line contract.

There has been a delay, which could extend to 6 months, on Met Cam's first consignment of rail cars, due in December 1980. The delay is because of problems with the supply of wheelsets from
BSC.
