PQ: HONG KONG: MR DENNIS CANAVAN MP
1. I submit a draft reply, background note and note for supplementaries
to the PQ put down by Mr Dennis Canavan MP (Labour
West Stirlingshire)
for oral answer on 16 January. I understand that Mr Ridley will prob-
ably reply in the absence abroad of Mr Blaker.
2.
Mr Canavan recently visited Hong Kong with two fellow Labour MPs
and he presumably intends to use the Question to ask supplementaries
about matters that came to his notice during that visit.
3. The Governor of Hong Kong is having talks in London this week, on
his way back to Hong Kong after a month spent in Scotland recuperating
from a successful hip operation in November. He will be having meetings
with the Secretaries of State for Defence and Trade, as well as with
Mr Blaker. It is unlikely that in his talks with Mr Blaker he will
spend much time on the purely internal matters likely to be raised by
Mr Canavan.
