MASS TRANSIT RAILWAY FACT, SPIDOT

+

A mass transit underground railway system 52.6 kilometres in length and comprising 50 stations was recommended for Hong Kong by the Government-commissioned consultants in 1970. This is known as the Full System. In 1975, the Goverment approved the construction of the route between Kun Tong in Kowloon and Chater in Central District on Hong Kong Island, called the Modified Initial System. The Mass Transit Railway Corporation was set up in September of that year to take charge of building and operating the railway. A public statutory body wholly smed by the Government, the Corporation is directed to operate, on prudent commercial principles. In July 1977, approval was giben to extend the Modified Initial System from Prince Edward in north Nathan Road to Tsuen Wan in the New Territories.
