will have been left in no doubt about the Chinese view of developments. The Chinese ambassador in Lisbon has said publicly that what is required in Macau is economic and political stability and he warned against attempts to involve Macau in party politics. For his part, President Eanes has made it clear that any changes to the Statutes would be best left until after a revision of the Portuguese Constitution due to take place next year. This view is shared by the Opposition here and by the Casa de Macau, the unofficial representative of Macau's interests in Lisbon.

A related plan by the Democratic Alliance Government was to reintroduce a separate constituency for Macau in their amendments to the Electoral Law which was laid before Parliament last week. It seems likely however that this proposal will be dropped following fierce opposition from the Reformadores group of five deputies who form part of the Democratic Alliance majority in the Assembly. The Reformadores have argued that it would be prepo strous to have a separate deputy for the 2,000 or so voters who register in Macau.
