According to Press reports, the Guangdong Foreign Trade Corporation has been established with responsibility to the Guangdong Provincial Government and the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Trade. The management of the Corporation is to rest mainly with the Provincial authority and is intended to provide integrated control of the 120-odd specialist branches throughout Guangdong dealing in different types of products, most of them exports to Hong Kong. A similar corporation has been established in Fujian Province.

The China Merchants Steam Navigation Co., which manages the Shekou

Industrial Zone north-west of Hong Kong, has announced the award of a HK$2.5 m. contract to Cable & Wireless Hong Kong for the provision of a telephone exchange

at Shekou and a microwave telecommunications link between Shekou and Shenzhen.

According to the managing director of RTV, one of Hong Kong's two television companies, the company has been asked by China's Central Broadcasting

Areas Bureau to assist in commercialising and modernising Chinese television. of assistance and co-operation under consideration include the organisation of advertising, the training of Chinese technical staff in Hong Kong, transmission of live broadcasts from Hong Kong and the use of Chinese news items by RTV.

The Carrian Group, a major but normally reticent development and property organisation based in Hong Kong but financed to a large extent by overseas Chinese, has announced that it is to co-operate with a similar organisation

in the Philippines, the Herdis Group, to form a joint company, Pelino Investment

Ltd., to build hotels in Hangzhou, Beijing and Shanghai. Agreements are expected to be signed with the Chinese in September. This is Carrian's first

involvement in projects in China.

The communist Hong Kong and Kowloon Workers' Children's School has closed and the Sun Chung Middle School is now regarded as suspended, having

made a nil return of enrolment last September. There are signs that the Yu

Hua Middle School, a communist school of some standing, with 450 pupils, will

be closed later this year and that the Chung Yip Middle School will reduce its

number of classes. There are now 30 registered communist schools, of which

only 23 are active.
