Proposed visit by the Governor to Guangzhou
Mr Wang said that the Governor would be welcome to visit Guangzhou.
He had just heard from Guangzhou that Governor Xi regretted that he would
not be there on 19 October since he was about to leave on a tour of the
US.
The Governor would be received by Mr Yang Shangkun, Vice-Governor
and Mayor of Guangzhou and by Vice-Governor Liu Tianfu, who was in overall
charge of work on illegal emigration. The Governor commented that he
and Governor Xi would be in the US at the same time. Might Governor Xi
also be in New York? Mr Wang said that he had just received the message
and did not have details of when Governor Xi would leave for the US. He
understood that he was making a tour of a number of different cities. The Governor asked whether Governor Xi would be moving permanently to Peking.
Mr Wang said that this would probably not be for about 6 months.
Fujian Office in Hong Kong
2. The Governor asked about the Fujian office which had recently been
set up in Hong Kong. Would this come under the NCNA? Mr Wang said that the Huamin Company would come organizationally under both the NCNA and
China Resources, the latter on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Trade in Peking. This was purely a trading company. The Governor said that he hoped
its establishment would lead to a further increase in trade between Hong
Kong and Fujian Province.
