Your minute of 11 August to Mr Harding on capital punishment in the dependent territories. The case of the stabbing in the Falkland Islands was heard in Port Stanley before Sir Peter Watkin Williams on 28 April 1980. The accused, a Chilean national, pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter. He was convicted of this latter charge and sentenced to nine months imprisonment.

2. With normal remission for good behaviour and time spent in custody, he is likely to complete his sentence in mid- September. He will then be deported to Chile. As the sentence is short and will not tax the Colony's resources too greatly, no further enquiries are being made about serving the sentence outside the Islands.
