Applications are invited for appointment as Motor Vehicle Examiner Grade II in the Transport Department of the Hong Kong Government. Successful candidates will be responsible for:—
(a) mechanical and physical inspection of motor vehicles to ensure their mechanical fitness, road-worthiness and compliance with legal requirements;
(b) investigation of motor vehicle accidents to identify the causes of accidents and mechanical defects involved, and giving expert evidence in court where necessary;
(c) examination of public transport and other specific types of vehicles to enforce necessary standards and requirements under relevant road traffic legislation; (d) application of the Road Traffic Ordinance relating to the construction use and maintenance of motor vehicles, including the interpretation of technical drawings and specifications; and
(e) administration of vehicle examination centres and supervision and training of Assistant Motor Vehicle Examiners.

Applicants must (a) have completed an approved appro- priate apprenticeship; and (b) have either (i) an acceptable qualification in automobile engineering, or (ii) at least 5 years' full-time practical experience (excluding appren- ticeship) in all fields of automobile engineering; and (c) have at least 3 years' experience at a supervisory level in the inspection, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles of all types. Preference will be given to those who possess a valid driving licence for heavy goods vehicles and who can speak both Cantonese and English.
The appointment will be for an initial period of 2 years. The salary scale for the post is from HK$4,600 to
HK$6,650 per month (approximately £4,800 to £6,940
p.a.*). Starting salary will depend on experience.
