The "work-to-rule" was temporary suspended on 3.1.79 following a meeting between the Staff Associations and three unofficial members of LegCo.

In the meantime the fact finding team is doing everything possible to complete all job inspections as a meeting has been scheduled for 17.1.79 when the accuracy of the job descriptions will be discussed.

The situation remains volatile.
Police Interpreters

The Police Interpreters continued with their go-slow and refusal to perform part of their duties. An unofficial meeting was held between the PI Association, Police Civil Secretary and CSB representatives. CSB representatives explained once again Government's stand and various face saving devices were suggested to the PI representatives.

The PIs have agreed to consider these and will put them to their members at an ECM to be held shortly. It appears that Government's firm stand over the ASOS might help to influence the PIs to call off their industrial action. Legal advice has confirmed that action can be taken to suspend PIs who refused to perform part of their normal duties.
Dental Technicians and Dental Technologists

Staff resumed normal working on 15.12.78. Discussions are continuing on how to increase their productivity while at the same time providing the staff with a better career structure. It is hoped to reach agreement with
the staff at a further meeting on 12.1.79.
Tax Inspectors
14.
The Tax Inspector Unit of HKCCSA wrote to the Government on 9.12.78 rejecting the reasons given in CSB's letter of 16.11.78 as to why an increase in salary cannot be justified. A one-day sit-in followed by an indefinite go-slow began on 15.12.78.

At the initiative of the Unit an unofficial meeting was held between the Department, Tax Inspector Unit and CSB representatives. CSB representatives offered to do further job inspections if normal working is resumed.

The Tax Inspectors agreed to take this back to their members and indicate that they will not step up their action in the meantime. their EGM on 8.1.79 the Tax Inspectors agreed to suspend their industrial action pending the job inspections.
Butchers
17.
Subject to the Urban Council agreement to the package of proposals a meeting has been scheduled on 15.1.79 with the Butchers. The aim of the meeting is to explain the package to the Butchers and to forestall possible go-slow or other forms of industrial action around Chinese New Year.
