LAST PAPER

Would you please refer to your letter XEG 354/1/2 of

13 November addressed to the Head of Chancery, Hong Kong. Your letter has been directed to the British Trade Commission in Hong Kong which is quite separate from the Hong Kong Government.

A breakdown of our expenditure from April to November 1979 on local travel is as follows:-

2.

British Trade Commission

British Diplomatic Service Mail Office Press Research Unit

British Civil Aviation Representative

Far East

Diplomatic Service Officers and

families coming to Hong Kong for medical treatment

£

640.-

53.--

51.--

5,341.

1,143.-

Total

7,228.-

We understand that journeys into China by members of our China Trade Unit are not regarded as local journeys. There appears to have been no examination of this administrative complication during the June inspection and we shall therefore continue to charge visits to China[ against subhead C 3(17(e).

3. I think the above figures will illustrate one of the oddities of this Post, i.e. that out of a total of £7,228 spent on local travel, only £744 is incurred by staff under my control. I cannot estimate the travel demands of DS Officers and their dependants coming to Hong Kong
