Hong Kong telegras os 618 and 649 to the London Office were most timely, for which many thanaş. hopin saw the three representono atives and Ars Elliott on 1 July. They did not make any points of which you are not already aware.
2. Their main complaint was that the compensation offered to the flat, and particularly the shop, owners was inadequate and did not represent the full market value of their property. What they wanted was air compensation for their prope: ty unich would enable them to buy similar flats in the same area.
3. They also mentioned the inadequacy of the compensacion for the businesses and of the dist. bance allowances but did not elaborate.
4. Mrs Elliott said that she thought it most unjust that these law-abiding, people were not being given enough compensation to buy new flats similar to their present ones, when the HTC was making such a profit out of the commercial development of the depots. also mentioned the large sums of money that were being spent on Vietnamese refugees.
She
5. kobin explained that he could not comment on the points that had been made about compensation but would simply pass them to you with the hope that it would be possible for those concerned to reach an amicable settlement.
6. As you will have seen, the visit has already generated eight Ius and we expect more! We have also just seen a letter to the
rime Minister.
7.
In these circumstances we should be grateful if you would keep us informed of any significant developments in this matter.
