NOTES FOR SUPPLEMENTARIES
THE HONG KONG BOAT DWELLERS
1. The boat dwellers concerned are squatters, living on
boats moored without authorisation in typhoon shelters. They
are either illegal immigrants from China still living on the
vessels in which they arrive in Hong Kong, former Hong Kong

fishermen who have taken jobs ashore, or former Hong Kong land
dwellers who have taken to living on boats as a cheap form of
accommodation.
HONG KONG GOVERNMENT HOUSING PROGRAMME
2. The Hong Kong Government aim to provide subsidised public
housing for all those now living in sub-standard accommodation.
Around 40,000 new homes, sufficient for 250,000 people, are
being made available every year. By 1985, public housing will
be available for about 65% of the population.
