CONCLUSION
The poor, if not destitute, living condition of Yaumati Boat dwellers is notorious and intolerable. It is becoming more serious not only due to the fragile decaying structure of the wooden boats at the risk of sinkage and leaking. The general living condition, sanitary, hygiene, and the development of the younger generation is also indispensible. It is their right to have a proper living, to resettle onshore, the government bears teh responsibility to improve their living to keep in par with the development of the society.
The boat dwellers in Yaumati shelter were not illegal immirgrants as what the government asserted. The Authority distorted the rightous demand of the boat dwellers and asserted them of taking advantage of their situation for a better opportunity to acquire government housing. This irresponsible attitude of the government cannot of any help in solving the problem if not worsen it.
The government, therefore, should take the issue seruously and make plans to resettle the boat dwellers within a comparatively shorter period, like 6 months, to rehouse the boat dwellers systematically and eliminate their housing problem that of basic shelter.
We do trust that the government have the capability to handle and solve the pro- blem and bears the responsibility to these troubled boat dwellers.
