STATISTICS ON LEGAL IMMIGRATION FROM CHINA AND ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION FROM ALL SOURCES

You will find the attached statistics of interest.

Legal Immigrants from China
(b) Age: They are much younger than I recall their being in
earlier years.
(c) Occupation: The number of students is high.
(g) Ability to Speak Cantonese: The number who cannot speak Cantonese is very high and does not augur well for inte- gration. There must be a large number of Chib ChowS among them.
3. Illegal Immigration
(c) Age and Sex: The percentage of males and those in the
15-29 age group are not surprising.
(f) Occupation: Nearly 314 are farmers/fishermen:
not surprising.
(h) Ability to Speak Cantonese:
again
Virtually all can.

The figures for illegal immigrants refer, of course, only to those who registered in 1978, many of whom will have arrived in 1977 or earlier. The 1979 figures will reflects the much higher rate towards the end of 1978.
