He graduated from the University of Madras in September 1977 with a third class Bachelor of Commerce Degree. After that he received training for a short time as a gemmological apprentice with Jayesh Brothers, importers and exporters of pearls, diamonds and precious stones in Bombay. On 16th May 1978
entered Hong Kong as a visitor and on 10th July 1978 submitted an application through solicitors, Stevenson and Company, to remain in Hong Kong to work as a resident partner in the business of his brother-in-law,
the co-petitioner. He stated that if his application were allowed, he had available for investment stock worth approximately HK$200, 000, and cash in the amount of HK$50,000.

sister. He has
in-law of been resident in Hong Kong since 1966, and, in 1976, established a firm known as Kareems, a sole proprietorship business dealing in the import, export and wholesaling of diamonds and precious stones. He employes two local staff (one office assistant and one receptionist/ secretary) and is also assisted in the business by his wife. His business, as at September 1978, was capitalised at HK$460,000 and sales record for 1977 was HK$2.3 million.
