PROCESSING FOR FAMILIES OF OVERSEAS CHINESE LEAVING THE COUNTRY MORE RELAXED

THAN BEFORE

Following the newly-implemented policy on overseas Chinese affairs, families of overseas Chinese will from now on be continually allowed out of the country on merits of cases and application procedures will be comparatively relaxed than before. This was indicated by a responsible official of the Kwangtung Province Canton Overseas Chinese Affairs Office in an interview with this newspaper reporter.

Applicants who have obtained entry permits of destination places and clear of political, criminal or financial cases in the country would be granted permission to leave the country, based on the urgency of need to leave.

Referring to the Hong Kong Government's recent restrictions on the stay of Mainland visitors, the official indicated that this was a measure

taken by the Hong Kong Government. In the mean time, our policy on the processing of people going to Hong Kong or other countries via Hong Kong remained unchanged.

The following is a summary of the interview between the reporter

Question:

Answer

Under new circumstances, will families of overseas Chinese who

apply to leave the country, or to go to Hong Kong and Macau be

relaxed?

Certainly it is more relaxed than before. As the policy on Overseas Chinese Affairs is gradually implemented, applicants who have obtained entry permits of the hosting countries and who are clear of political, criminal and financial proceedings

will be allowed by the Public Security Department to leave in

groups according to the urgency of their needs to go.

What is the number of people applying to leave the country at

present?

It is very difficult to have an accurate figure. The number of

people processed last year increased by about 30% compared with the previous year.

It is certain that the number will increase

further this year. Our processing has been expedited.

In Canton for instance, if the applicants have already obtained visas for their destinations, they will be allowed to leave,

generally speaking, within two months.
