AMENDMENTS TO THE IMMIGRATION RULES

1. We are sending to you separately all the draft proposed changes to the Immigration Rules seeking your views before they are finalised. We have been asked to seek your views and the views of the Government to which you are accredited on one in particular.

2. Home Office Ministers are considering the abolition of Immigration Rule No

which allows a Commonwealth citizen with a UK born grandparent to come to the UK for work for an indefinite period. They have noted the replies to FCO tel to Canberra No 282 of 1 June 1978 when you commented on possible reaction to the withdrawal of this rule when the Select Committee on Race Relations and Immigration recommended it. The Home Office have now asked for your latest views and for the views of the Australian, New Zealand, and Canadian Government.
