Transmission of Citizenship
3.
Consideration is being given to the acquisition
of citizenship by descent to those persons, one of
whose parents is a citizen by birth. Thus there will be
transmission through both the male and female lines.
But there will be no provision by which a family resident
overseas could secure citizenship for their children
for generation after generation. However, there could
be some provision whereby the child of the seeond
generation born overseas could acquire citizenship if
the family returned to live in the UK or a dependenny-
for a certain period and perhaps fulfilled other con-
ditions. NOTE: If implemented on these lines a person
who is himself a citizen by registration or
naturalisation would not be able to transmit his
citizenship automatically to his children born over-
seas.
Citizenship by Marriage
4. There will be no automatic acquisition of citizen-
ship by marriage.
Consideration is being given to
impose a residential condition in the UK or a dependency,
possibly of 3 years, before a wife could apply for
citizenship following marriage to a citizen, or impose
a longer waiting period if the wife resides overseas.
Consideration is also being given to the possibility
that
of whether husbands should be able to apply for citizen-
ship and if so on what conditions.
Dual Nationality
5.
Consideration is being given to the loss of
citizenship by a person who acquires another citizenship
