Apart from man-made factors such as strikes. Nature has not been kind to Britain either. Snowstorms have led to bad harvests for crops and poultry so that only cabbages, potatoes and celery could be found in the markets. In the northern parts of Wales and Scotland, people could not get any drinking water because plumbers happened to be on strike when mains burst as a result of the extreme cold. The poor people could only take ice from the ground and boil it for drinking or washing purposes.

Coalminers are unwilling to be left out. They have threatened to stage a large- scale strike to press for a 40 per cent increase in pay.
