b) Dual nationality

United Kingdom Law at present contains no

bar on the holding of dual nationality.

We regard this as one of the great privileges of British nationality and strongly urge that it be

continued. We see no reason why the petty citizenship laws, mainly of newly developed or developing

countries, should be copied to prevent the holding of dual nationality by United Kingdom citizens.

The limiting of citizenship by descent to four generations in itself acts as a control over the number of United Kingdom citizens with dual nationality and we feel that, subject to the four generation overall control, there should be no restriction on the holding of dual nationality. To provide otherwise would in our opinion cause considerable hardship and result in no benefits whatsoever to Britain."

There has been no reaction from Members of the Legislative Assembly or Executive Council and I am inclined not to oblige them to offer views unless they ask to do so. No doubt the next stage, if HMG decide to go ahead with the proposals, modified in the light of any comment received and adopted, will be the production of a White Paper when there will be, no doubt, further opportunity for comment.
