In pursuit of these objectives the Prime Minister urged the UN

Secretary General to call an early international conference and

our subsequent lobbying was instrumental in ensuring that this

took place. The conference in Geneva secured promises of more

than 250,000 extra resettlement places and substantial payments

to UNHCR. For their part HMG announced on 18 July that the UK

would accept a further 10,000 refugees, all to be taken from

Hong Kong, and make an additional contribution of £5 million

towards dealing with the refugee problem in South East Asia

over the next 12 months.
