OFFTAKE OF REFUGEES FROM HONG KONG
I spoke to Mr Bertilman, First Secretary in the Swedish Embassy, this afternoon about the latest refugee statistics in Hong Kong telegram No 1542. I gave him the offtake figures for USA, UK and the rest of Europe and pointed out that even among the Scandinavians Sweden was at the bottom of the league table. Given that Hong Kong still had the largest number of boat people awaiting settlement, we hoped that all our friends would be able to take an appropriate proportion from Hong Kong when they were making up their intake quotas from the countries of first asylum. Mr Bertilman, whose last post was Hanoi, took the point.
