deputy editor of the Morgenpost, Herr Gänsicke, gave Hardie the following information.

6. The funds raised had been far in excess of what the Morgenpost had expected. It was proving difficult to find useful ways in which the money could be spent. One project was to set up a small trust savings fund of about DM200,000 which would pay for 20 children who would be fostered by Berlin families. The balance of over DM500,000 would be used to provide "something special" for refugees in Berlin which they would not normally have had if the appeal had not been made. An administrative body had been established comprising the Senator for Labour and Social Affairs and the Senator for Families, Youth and Sport, a member of the German Red Cross and a representative from the Morgenpost.

7.

Gänsicke told Hardie this his impression from contacts with the Governing Mayor was that the latter would be cautious about offering to take more than the present allocation of 760 refugees. His preference was to wait and see how the city coped with assimilating that number before deciding to increase its quota.

8. We will continue to follow this up with the Senat and others concerned and will let you know of any developments which might prove advantageous for Hong Kong.
