Vietnamese Refugees - Employment Situation

As statistics on the number of Vietnamese refugees in employment are still being collated, detailed figures are not yet available and any analysis cannot be made at this stage. This is further complicated by daily transfers to UNHCR camps and Government-run open camps and the fact that more and more refugees take up employment every day, a general picture of the employment situation is given in the following paragraphs.

Sham Shui Pọ Transit Centre (8,350 persons)

The Centre Manager believes that approximately 80%, or 4,800 of those above the age of 16 (totalling 6,000) are working. Most work full-time and overtime; few have part-time jobs.

They work in textile, radio, electronics, camera, watch and plastic toy factories all over Hong Kong. Some are provided with company transport to and from place of work. Their average daily wage is $30.

Jubilee Transit Centre (7,381 persons)

The Centre Director believes that there are now 3,070 in full-time employment. A breakdown by sex and age is as follows :
