How many refugees have left Indochina?
Since 1975 about one million people have left Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
Where are they now?
230,000 refugees, mainly Vietnamese citizens of Chinese ethnic origin from North Vietnam, are now in China. 220,000, mostly Laotians and Cambodians, await resettlement in Thailand. Many "boat people", especially from South Vietnam, are in camps in Hong Kong (66,000), Malaysia
(78,000) and Indonesia (47,000), awaiting resettlement. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on 14 June 1979 that resettlement places were needed for over 300,000.
