On 16 July there were 66,206 refugees in Hong Kong. 65,824 have arrived since 1 January 1979. Only 5,263 have left during the same
period.

At present there are over 50,000 refugees in Hong Kong Government accommodation and about 15,000 in three UNHCR camps. UNHCR plan to increase the capacity of their present camps to 28,000 by the end of October and to take responsibility for Kai Tak North camp (15,000) on 1 August. There are detailed plans for government accommodation to increase to 67,000 by the end of October, with contingency plans for
a further 54,000.
