VIETNAMESE REFUGEES AND IMMIGRATION TO THE UNITED KINGDOM

I am sorry for the delay in replying to your letter of 9 May about Iain Orr's request for figures.

As regards general immigration to the United Kingdom I attach 2 tables taken from the "Control of Immigration Statistics, 1978" (Cmnd. 7565). These show the total number of people accepted for settlement in the United Kingdom, both on arrival and on removal of the time limit. As you will see, the total acceptances for settlement (ie both foreign nationals and Commonwealth citizens) for the period in question was as follows:-

1975

1976

1977

1978

82,405

80,745

69,313

72,331

representing a total of 304,794 over the whole period.

Figures for Indo-China refugees accepted from May 1975 to 27 June 1979 (very few of whom will be included in the above figures) are as follows:-

Vietnamese

Cambodian

Laotian
