REPORT OF THE UNITED NATIONS HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES 1/
SUMMARY
The present report has been prepared in accordance with Article 11 of the Statute of the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (adopted by the General Assembly pursuant to resolution 420 (V) of 14 December 1950), which provides inter alia that "the High Commissioner should report annually to the General Assembly through the Economic and Social Council". It gives an account of the main activities carried out for the benefit of refugees and displaced persons by his Office under the terms of the Statute and subsequent resolutions of the General Assembly. These include international protection, emergency relief, and the achievement of permanent solutions through voluntary repatriation, resettlement through migration to other countries and local settlement. The report also contains information on co-operation with other members of the United Nations system and with inter-governmental organizations, as well as on financial questions and public information activities. The period covered by the report extends from 1 April 1978 to 31 March 1979, except for statistical and financial data, most of which cover the calendar year 1970.
