During the month of May, 51,139 'boat people'arrived in South East Asian countries. The largest number, 18,718 arrived in Hong Kong, 17,508 arrived in Malaysia, 10,035 in Indonesia, 2,780 in Thailand, 918 in Macau, 814 in the Philippines, 317 in Singapore, and 49 in Japan.

During the month of May 8,560 persons departed for resettlement to third countries.

REFUGEE DEVELOPMENTS IN AFRICA

The Secretary General, Dr. Waldheim, in response to an urgent appeal from President Lule of Uganda, has requested UNHCR to extend emergency assistance to the returning Ugandan refugees and exiles and also to Ugandans who have become displaced inside Uganda. A UNHCR mission is currently carrying out an assessment of these needs.

At the request of the Patriotic Front, Zimbabwe African People's Union (PF/ZAPU), UTHCR is assisting with contribution of some US$ 125,000 in the local purchase of beans, supplementary food, agricultural implements and machinery for Zimbabwean refugees in Zambia.

MOVEMENT OF NCW-LDOVIS PROH BANGLADESH TO PAKISTAN

Some 17,000 non-Bengulis not included in the mass airlift undertaken by UNHCR in 1973-1974 in the Sub-Continent, will be moved from Bangladesh to Pakistan. A plan for this transfer has been worked out between the Government

Two ships will be of Pakistan, the Government of Bangladesh, ICRC and UNHCR. made available by the governments concerned and air transport will be facilitated by the two national carriers. UNHCR will be providing $950,000 for the programme, which is expected to begin later this month. CONTRIBUTIONS TO UNICR PROGRAMES

The Government of Finland has announced an additional contribution of approximately $200,000 to the UNHCR 1979 General Programme.

The Government of Belgium has pledged to donate 1,500 tons of wheat, valued at $318,000, for Zairian refugees who have repatriated.

The Provincial Government of Quebec, Canada, has pledged $83,000 for projects in Angola, Burundi and Zaire, which are being undertaken in connection with the International Year of the Child.

The German non-governmental organization Brot für die Welt has announced a contribution of 3,000 tons of wheat, valued at $636,000, for displaced persons in Viet Nam.
